Profile

I am an academic foundation doctor in Edinburgh.

I studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with honours. I have a masters in anatomy (distinction) and a bachelors in neuroscience (first class honours). My research interests are in artificial intelligence for healthcare. I have formal experience teaching anatomy to surgical trainees and medical undergraduates.

I have built the following ventures:

  • Principal’s Go Abroad Fund (travel grant) £350 to attend the European Summer School for Emergency and Trauma Surgery (12/07/18 – 19/07/18).
  • Summer Teaching Fellowship – £2,600 from the University of Hong Kong to teach anatomy and international relations to high school students (June-July 2018).
  • Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Scholarship, a stipend of £2,000 for a summer research project (June 2015).

Co-Founder & Managing Director, SUTURE UK, 2020-present
  • I co-founded the non-profit organisation SUTURE UK, which provides structured, accessible, and affordable surgical skills training for medical students through the national network of student surgical societies. 27 student surgical societies and over 300 students have enrolled on the scheme.
  • I lead the executive team; our organisation has 35 surgical trainees, foundation doctors and medical students from across the UK.
  • We are supported by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd) and other major postgraduate organisations in surgical training, including the BAPRAS and ENT UK.

President, Edinburgh University Neurological Society, 2019-2020
  • Responsible for co-ordinating a committee of 13 students across 5 domains: international conference, neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neurosurgery and public engagement.
  • As neurosurgery lead (2017-2019) I twice led a team of paramedics, neurosurgeons, pre-hospital care doctors and medical students in the planning and execution of “Neurotheatre – Live Brain Surgery”, a public engagement event for an audience of 250.
  • This involved simulation of the chain-of-trauma care following a road traffic accident, including paramedic response (delivered in partnership with the Scottish Ambulance Service), Medic One treatment and removal of a subdural haematoma. Secured over £1000 in funding.
President, University College London Union Volunteering Society, 2014-2015
  • One of the university’s largest societies, with over 700 members.
  • Responsible for leading a committee of over 20 students in areas such as social enterprise, international volunteering, marketing and socials.
  • Led the planning and execution of several one-off and long-term volunteering projects, including a crêpe stall run by volunteers and young people from a homeless shelter.

Faculty, Regional Anatomy for Core Surgical Training, 2019
  • Invited to join the faculty for the Scottish Deanery regional anatomy review for Core Surgical Trainees (trunk).
  • Delivered 4 1-hour cadaver-based sessions on thoracic anatomy to 25 trainees.
Surgical Skills Lead, Edinburgh University Surgical Society, 2019-2020
  • Responsible for organising all suturing and surgical skills tutorials for the society.
  • I have established a fortnightly skills club which is facilitated by surgical trainees and foundation doctors.
  • Developed a basic curriculum and piloted methods of assessment.
Senior Tutor, Edinburgh Student Anatomy Society, 2018-2019
  • Devised a clinical anatomy curriculum to complement MBChB anatomy teaching, which was approved by the anatomy department.
  • Recruited 29 near-peer tutors to deliver the curriculum to year 1 and 2 medical students (for cardiovascular, respiratory, locomotor, neuroscience, gastrointestinal and renal/endocrine modules).
  • Tutorials were attended by 294 students.
Summer Teaching Fellowship, The University of Hong Kong, 2017
  • Awarded a fellowship to teach high-school students (aged 13-18) as part of summer exchange program in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
  • Designed and delivered lessons focused on anatomy as well as the global refugee crisis to over 400 students in total.
  • Award and stipend valued in excess of £2600.
